Renowned Treatment Center in Manhattan Beach

For over 90 years, Torrance Memorial Medical Center has faithfully served the people of the South Bay. Operating under the umbrella of the Torrance Memorial Medical Center, the Thelma McMillen Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment is a hospital-based, non-profit recovery and treatment program. The Center offers outpatient treatment for teens and adults, as well as education and prevention services.

The outpatient program is designed for teens and adults to receive treatment in a real world setting, allowing them to attend work and school while also getting and staying sober. The program is staffed by highly professional and experienced counselors, psychologists, and support staff. Confidentiality is one of their biggest priorities, along with dedicated and individualized treatment.

The Thelma McMillen Center offers several different programs for teens and adults, depending on their needs. The adult three-stage outpatient program begins with workshops, lectures, and a 12-step ethos that get to the root of the addiction. Group, individual, and family therapy are provided to support the patient and their loved ones. In this initial stage, patients will also work with therapists to develop a treatment plan. This first stage lasts six to eight weeks. The second stage lasts six weeks, and patients will continue attending counseling and other self-help meetings to prevent relapse. Finally, the third and final stage lasts for 24 weeks, during which counseling and support are still provided to the patient.

The teen three-stage outpatient program looks a little different. When first entering the program, teens’ needs are comprehensively assessed. The first ten-week phase involves family therapy, introduction to the 12-step method, and education. A team of specialists develops a personalized treatment plan. During the four-month second phase, teens will learn how to prevent relapse, use their knowledge in a practical way, and gain peer support. The third and last stage varies in length of time; teens are welcome to continue attending monthly and weekly support groups and activities until they turn 18.

The Center also offers a specialized treatment option for those who suffer from opioid addiction, including prescription drugs like oxycodone and hydrocodone, as well as drugs like heroin. These patients have different needs than other addicts, and the Center is ready to provide for those needs. Once entering treatment, the patient will enter the intensive outpatient program, but will also be evaluated to see if they’re eligible for Medicated Assisted Treatment. If eligible, patients are welcome to join an opioid-specific education group and process.

For 23 years, the Thelma McMillen Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment has been committed to ending drug addiction in their community. With continuing education and prevention strategies, as well as high-quality outpatient programs for both teens and adults, the Center is dedicated to making a difference and providing quality care to their patients. If you or someone you love is addicted to drugs or alcohol, make the first brave step to ask for treatment today.
